San Antonio TX Hotel Vacation Destinations - The Alamo

Misión San Antonio de Valero, otherwise known as The Alamo was built in 1724, and its original native Indian inhabitants were some of San Antonio's earliest residents. Spanish soldiers gave the old mission the name Alamo (Spanish for "cottonwood") and later, fought unsuccessfully against the Mexican army in the Texas Revolution, their courage giving others the now-famous rallying cry, "Remember the Alamo!"

San Antonio Texas - Alamo History

Alamo History.

For nearly 70 years from 1724 to 1793, missionaries and their Native American converts called the Alamo home. In the 1800s, the Alamo was a Spanish military outpost, and later, it housed both revolutionaries and royalists during the Mexican war for independence. The Alamo was a key turning point in the Texas Revolution of 1836. Caught off guard by the Mexican army, Texas soldiers and volunteers, including Davey Crockett and Jim Bowie, were able to fend off the Mexican assault for 13 days, before succumbing to the might of General Santa Anna's troops. The Alamo today remains a source of pride and a shrine to liberty throughout Texas and United States.  [Top]
